THE PILLAR OF THE GROUP
The Group as a rebirth matrix
Why Biodanza is practised in group and not individually? If Biodanza is a system of personal development, why do I need the group to find myself? These are some of the questions that people approaching the Biodanza Method for the first time may ask themselves.
The group, one of the 7 Pillars in Biodanza, is established as a “life-generating centre” in which each participant finds an affective container and permission to undertake one’s own process of change. By integrating the body, music, movement, and experiences in group situations, Biodanza opens up new therapeutic paths. An affectively integrated group constitutes a “Bio-generator”, i.e. a matrix of rebirth in which the encounter with the other allows the revelation of one’s own identity at the same time. The presence of the other modifies the functioning of people at all levels, organic, emotional, and existential.
Biodanza is neither a solipsistic system nor a system of verbal communication. The way of Biodanza group integration differentiates radically from other traditional groups. Its power is in the reciprocal induction of integrative vivencias (experience) among the group participants. Situations of encounter have the power to profoundly change attitudes and forms of human relationships.
The atmosphere created when the group reaches the basic level of integration is a world without barriers, where people are not a “real limit” to their own inner expression. This “atmosphere” allows the bodies to become permeable again to the presence and power of the other, and for integrative emotions of great intensity to manifest.
In this way, the group in Biodanza embraces not only an authentic human encounter, brimming with glances and silent languages, but also allows a new mode of identification, a more essential perception of others, facilitating and precipitating processes of growth. In the poetic words of Rolando Toro: “The Biodanza group is like a gap open to innocent and universal love.”
