The purpose of the conference was to present the “EMPOWERMENT” project: its development, its aims, and its results.
“In the context of health promotion, the health care section within the IPM Beccaria has the objective of structuring an activity that enhances the concept of” EMPOWERMENT “, a strategy that through health education and the promotion of health-friendly behaviours provides people with the tools to make the best decisions for their well-being, thus reducing cultural and social inequalities. This can be considered as a kind of “information therapy” that aims to reduce the asymmetry of knowledge between the doctor and patient, a process through which people can acquire greater control over the decisions and actions that affect their health.
The Penitentiary Medicine team operating within the IPM Beccaria protects the right to health in prison, underlining how the integration of the treatment areas operating within the Institute (Health, Educational, Safety) is essential for the common purpose of health, enhancing the experience in detention as a moment of social education and therefore as a moment of health education.”

Biodanza has been involved in this project as a group motor activity with the aim of involving both juveniles and social workers through music, movement and a sequence of exercises, so as to offer a continuous stimulus to move with joy, to enter into relationships with others, to have the courage to express themselves, to perceive their natural rhythms and to have self esteem and confidence in themselves and in others.
Two Biodanza operators, Tiziana Brambilla and Luigi Radogna, in collaboration with the Scuolatoro Biodanza School of Milan, proposed 16 meetings on a weekly basis of which 8 meetings were dedicated to welcoming the juveniles during their first week of presence in the institute. Their social workers and educators, from the Milan municipality, accompanied them; 8 meetings were for the social workers of three treatment areas, demonstrating the feasibility of integrating users and workers from different treatment areas into a common health project intended for psycho-physical and social well-being.
The conference saw a succession of speeches of considerable interest and speakers who, in various capacities, have a calling to deal with youth problems, penitentiary health, prevention of antisocial behaviour and related issues.
Among those present was Antonello Calabrese, the President of the Scientific and Technical Committee of Bionatural Disciplines (DBN), a consultative organ in the Lombardy Region, formed in compliance with the Regional Law 2/2005 “Rules on Bionatural Disciplines”, promulgated on February 1st 2005 by the Lombardy Region.
The CTS, which currently includes 32 disciplines registered in the Regional Registries including Biodanza, is composed of representatives of all the Training Institutions and the Associations of Operators who in recent years have worked to spread the culture and methods of the various DBN’s in the Lombardy Region and the rest of the country.
Antonello Calabrese underlined how, despite the diversity of the history and methods, these disciplines have as their common denominator the passion for life, respect for mankind. This common soul, which aims to stimulate vitality and the pursuit of well-being, understood in its broadest sense, can be a valid aid and support tool even in those places where one is dealing with situations of hardship.
Tiziana Brambilla took the floor after Antonello Calabrese and related, in a passionate and impassioned speech, the experience that she and her colleague Luigi Radogna had had in proposing Biodanza meetings to the juveniles and the social workers.
During the Conference, the participants were invited to take part in a little taste of Biodanza, as a vitalizing and unifying moment with a certain symbolic value. The response was euphoric appreciation.
